Take breads, for instance; white bread is high in carbs and usually low in nutritional value while whole grain bread or breads made with flax meal is a healthier option. Some of these breads sell extra thin sliced bread which cuts your carbs and calories while still enjoying a sandwich.  Making an incredible sandwich that is healthy and satisfying isn’t difficult.  Select your favorite low fat meat such as turkey, roast beef, chicken, or go vegetarian and start out with a slice avocado. Add some lettuce, tomato and a pickle and you have a delicious healthier sandwich option.

Pasta is a staple in millions of homes, it’s cheap to buy and there are thousands of ways to prepare it. Regular pasta has a lot of carbs, and can raise your glucose level. There are whole grain pastas and pastas that are high in fiber for healthier options. There are many different types of tomato based pasta sauces on the market, and all of them contain Licopene, which is very good for you, however choosing a pasta sauce that is low in sugar, sodium, and fat is a much healthier option. Another way that you can make your pasta healthy is to eliminate the meat and add mushroom and vegetables such as zucchini and summer squash.  It will still taste great!

If you enjoy pizza, you can still eat it; you just have to change the ingredients a little bit. Use whole grain dough and or, make the dough extra thin. Use a pizza sauce that is in low fat, low in sugar and sodium, also, instead of the greasy toppings, add vegetable, chicken or even tofu and low fat mozzarella cheese and you have an incredible, healthy pizza.

There are times when nothing satisfies you like a big fat cheeseburger; one option that you can choose is to use ground turkey instead of ground beef; ground turkey is lean, is very low in fat and is extremely healthy. You’ll never taste the difference but the health benefits are great.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day meal; if you enjoy a hot breakfast, believe it not, you can make a hot bowl of ricotta mixed with pumpkin puree and a little agave or honey; this is a delicious low carb way to start a cold day.

Having a good attitude about healthy foods is important, if you have a negative one, you’ll most likely not stick to your new diet plan. It’s all depends on how you look at it. If you get creative in your meal preparations then you will enjoy the meal even more; if you show your family how enthusiastic you are about the meal you prepared, they will most likely enjoy it also.

Mashed potatoes are the heart of everyone’s meal. The creamy buttery texture is something that no one can resist. Now we all know that mashed potatoes are very high in fat and calories, but no one seems to care they gobble them up faster then any other food.

Cutting the fat and calories in mashed potatoes is really pretty basic; instead of cream or milk use half and half, you can also substitute half of the potatoes’ with turnip, believe it or not, it is very tasty.

Low Glycemic Index diets: can be protective against chronic diseases such as Diabetes

We all know that Diabetes is a horrible disease, which goes without saying. Yet in the United States today over twenty six million people have it and either don’t take it as seriously as they should or they just don’t understand the ramifications. Diabetes is insidious; it adds so much stress to the body that resistance is lowered and you can develop serious chronic diseases.

Taking proper care of yourself is crucial to your overall health; people with diabetes know that diet is a major part of managing your disease. A low GI diet is essential in managing your diabetes and warding off chronic diseases.

Gaining weight happens to everyone; you gain it and then diet and lose it. For those with diabetes, it not that simple even though weight management is imperative to staying healthy. When a diabetic consumes foods that are high on the GI, their bodies react differently then non-diabetics; the risk of developing chronic diseases increase substantially.

The glucose in fats and carbohydrates absorb into the blood at a faster rate then low GI foods and raise the blood sugar level. This in turn requires them to take more insulin. Diabetes Facts

Diabetes is an insidious disease it wreaks havoc on the bodies of people afflicted with it; unlike other diseases, Diabetes can affect different parts of your body in different ways.

In the United States today, there are more then twenty six million people that suffer from Diabetes, it is crucial that they understand what the devastating effect it has on their bodies. Despite the alarming number of people that suffer with this affliction, there are facts about Diabetes that they do not know.

  • 27% of people ages 65 or older are diagnosed with Diabetes
  • Diabetes kills more people every year then Breast Cancer and Aids Combined
  • Recent estimates project that as many as 1 in 3 American adults will have diabetes in 2050 (if it keeps increasing at this pace)
  • Every 17 seconds, someone is diagnosed with diabetes

One of the deadliest effects of Diabetes is heart disease; Heart disease involves a number of different disorders, all of which effect heart function. Heart disease includes conditions such as hardening of the arteries, also known as arteriosclerosis, heart palpitations, heart attacks, high blood pressure and hypertension.

Another life threatening effect of diabetes is kidney problems. Renal failure occurs quite often in diabetic patients. People develop of number of symptoms that indicate there may be a problem with the kidneys.

One of the more common signs of kidney problems as associated with diabetes is swelling of the extremities particularly the legs and the feet. This is known as edema it an indication that the body is retaining fluid. In many ways kidney disease becomes gradually worse until it is necessary for a person to undergo dialysis on a regular basis.

Nerve damage is another result of diabetes; it is estimated that nearly half of the people that develop diabetes will experience some form of nerve damage. Nerve damage that is caused by diabetes is called diabetic neuropathy.

Nerve damage occurs when glucose or sugar destroys the nerves that line the blood vessels. This can initially result in tingling or numbness in the finger or toes and eventually it will spread to other areas of the body.

Nerve damage can be one of the most serious effects of diabetes because it can eventually make it difficult for people to feel when they have an injury.

This is especially true with the feet, which are prone to nerve damage as a result of the disease. Therefore, it is very important for people with diabetes to talk to their doctor and make him or her aware of any issues they may have with their nerves in order to combat the problem and prevent the spread of the nerve damage.

Eating foods that are high in fats and carbohydrates increase blood sugars and the fats may also coat the arteries causing high blood pressure and heart attacks. More people die of heart disease than other diseases each year and part of this is linked directly to Diabetes.

It is important diabetics have a proper diet that consists of low GI foods. Because most type 2 diabetics contract the disease later in life, they can control it through diet, exercise and medication. All three work together to keep you healthy however diet is extremely important when treating Diabetes.

Understanding Diabetes & How You Can Help. November Is National Diabetes Awareness Month

Diabetes is a devastating disease; it is insidious in its ability to upend the lives of all it affects. For those who have diabetes or are at risk of developing it it’s important to understand what devastating complications are associated with it. Diabetes brings a host of related complications, including neuropathy, cardiovascular disease, vision problems (can lead to blindness) and kidney disease. Understanding how to prevent and treat them is a vital part of managing diabetes.  Having proper medical care is very important.

For those whose lives are not affected by diabetes, it may be difficult to understand the effects of diabetes and how it completely changes lives. For instance, diabetes cause poor blood circulation causing even minor wounds to heal more slowly. Therefore, people with diabetes have to visit a podiatrist to have their toenails cut. They cannot do it themselves, if they try to and knick themselves; there is a real possibility of infection which can lead to gangrene and amputation.

In the United States alone, Diabetes affects more the twenty six million people.

According to the CDC, Diabetes kills more people every year then breast cancer and aids combined.

According to the American Diabetes Association, type 1, diagnosed in children and young adults, is a condition in which the pancreas does not produce insulin; the hormone people need to convert sugar and other foods into energy. Five to 10 percent of those impacted by the disease have type 1 diabetes.

The more common form is type 2 diabetes. Older adults, as well as African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, Asians, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islander populations have a higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

Many pregnant women are diagnosed with gestational diabetes, according to the ADA. If untreated or poorly managed, it can lead to health problems for the baby later on, such as obesity and a risk for type 2 diabetes. The baby may grow to be too big, risking injury to the child during birth.

People who are overweight or obese are more susceptible to developing type 2 diabetes and with three quarters of residents of the United States falling into this category; the risk of developing Diabetes is great; something needs to be done now to stop this terrible disease.

November is Diabetes awareness month and many organizations are holding events that will bring attention to this devastating disease. The American Diabetes Association is holding events in every state. They also ask everyone to take the pledge to end Diabetes by joining the cause on Facebook under the American Diabetes Association.
